Police have arrested 5 presiding officers and an assistant teacher on charges of holding a secret meeting on behalf of a candidate to influence the election in Sirajganj Sadar Upazila. Because of this, 10 presiding officers have been replaced by returning officers. Deputy Commissioner Mir Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman gave this information at a press conference organized in the hall room of the Deputy Commissioner at 9:30 tonight.
The arrested are Sirajul Islam, Assistant Professor of Jamuna Degree College, Sadar Upazila, Ashraful Islam, Principal of S,B Railway Colony High School and College, Abu Sama, Lecturer of Sirajganj Police Lines School and College, Bachchu Kumar Ghosh, Lecturer of Bahuka College, Principal Officer of Janata Bank Sirajganj Zonal Office. Yasin Arafat and their coordinator Sialkol Government Primary School assistant teacher and Sirajganj District Primary Teachers Association President Aminur Islam.
Deputy Commissioner Mir Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman said, based on secret information, I came to know that some presiding officers listed in Sirajganj Sadar Upazila are having a secret meeting to influence the election on behalf of a chairman candidate inside the Garden Palace Resort in Kadai area of Sadar Upazila at around 8 pm on Sunday. After receiving the news, an operation was carried out in coordination with the police, district administration and election office. But they were not found at the spot immediately. During the operation, the CCTV footage from the scene and some people of the organization were brought to the police station for questioning.
Superintendent of Police Arifur Rahman Mandal said in a press conference that 5 presiding officers and their assistant teacher Aminur Islam of Master Mind Primary School were arrested on Monday in various places. Efforts are underway to arrest the rest. However, he said that the secret meeting was being held on behalf of which candidate will be informed after further investigation.
Returning Officer and District Election Officer Mohammad Shahidul Islam said in the press conference that a case has been filed against 8 named people and 20 unknown people. There are 171 centers in Sirajganj Sadar Upazila. After this incident, 10 presiding officers have already been replaced and 10 new ones have been appointed.
