Shibbir Ahmad obtained his PhD degree in Economics


Shibbir Ahmad, son of Comilla, has obtained a PhD degree in Development Economics from Michigan State University, USA.

He started his PhD in Applied Economics Department of Michigan State University in 2019 after obtaining Bachelor (Honours) and Master Degree from Economics Department of Dhaka University and Master Degree in Economics and Mathematics from Central Michigan University, USA.

A chapter in Shibbir Ahmad's PhD dissertation was on labor market inequality in Bangladesh. Where he has shown that among the graduates who have passed out from Dhaka University who attended madrasas at the secondary and higher secondary level, they are discriminated against in the job market. He also shed light on religious dress and discrimination on the basis of gender. This study is the first work done on labor market inequality in Bangladesh which was published seriously in several national dailies last year. Shibbir Ahmad also worked as a consultant for the World Bank for some time after completing his PhD.

Shibbir Ahmad worked as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at Stamford University Bangladesh and as a Senior Research Associate in the Research Department of BRAC before moving to the United States for higher education.

Dr. Shibbir Ahmad is the son of Maulana Sofiqur Rahman of Hangra village in Nangalkot upazila of Comilla district. He will join the University of Virginia in the United States as a post-doctoral researcher next month. In the future he wants to do higher research in development economics.
