As a new month approaches, so does another round of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

SNAP, also known as food stamps, provides monthly financial assistance to low-income households across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories. The funds, which can be spent on groceries, are delivered via electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards, which can be used at participating stores.

Benefits are paid to recipients on a monthly basis, but when you get your payment depends on where in the U.S. you live. While the food welfare program is funded by the federal government, state and local authorities administer the funds, meaning not everyone is paid on the same date.

For example, in California, if a case number ends in 01, that recipient will get their benefits earlier in the month than those who have a case number ending in a higher number. Other states pay according to the first letter of your last name, such as Delaware, and some, like Rhode Island, send out all SNAP payments on the same day.

Starting this month, SNAP recipients in Colorado can also get an additional $60 in benefits per month if they buy fruit and vegetables from participating retailers and markets.
