Special OMS for three months in flood affected areas

Recently, the special OMS program of the Ministry of Food has been taken up at the municipality and union level of the affected areas to provide rice and flour to the affected people of 14 districts due to the severe floods in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.

On Sunday (September 1), Food Secretary Ismail Hossain briefed the media persons about the overall food situation of the country including internal food procurement, storage situation and government food assistance program in flood affected districts in the conference room of the Food Ministry.

Food Secretary Ismail Hossain said that this special OMS will be given to 230 centers in those areas. 230 tons of rice and 230 tons of flour will be sold per day as 1 ton of rice and 1 ton of flour per center. A total of 14 thousand 490 tons of rice and 14 thousand 490 tons of flour will be sold in this program in the current September and next October and November. Rice will be sold at Tk 30 per kg, open flour at Tk 24 per kg and packets of flour (2 kg per packet) at Tk 55.

The food secretary also said that anyone can take this service in the flood-affected areas. In these 3 months, 41 crore 12 lakh taka for rice and 49 crore 55 lakh taka for flour, a total of 90 crore 68 lakh 18 thousand 682 taka will be given by the Ministry of Food.

On the other hand, giving information about OMS activities across the country, the secretary said that currently rice and flour are being sold in OMS sector in all city corporations, labor intensive 4 districts (Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur and Narsingdi), all district headquarters municipalities across the country.

A total of 910 tons of rice and 1,260,500 tons of flour are being sold in the OMS program in a total of 912 centers across the country (out of 912 centers, 910 centers have rice and flour and 2 centers have only flour). Out of this, OMS activities are running in total 191 centers including 118 shops, 70 trucks and 3 centers under innovation in Dhaka city.
