Minister of State for Information Technology Saja Fatima Khawaja has denied the government's involvement in the slow internet in Pakistan. He claims, excessive use of VPNs has affected internet speed. On Sunday (August 18) media Geo News reported this information.
At a press conference in Islamabad, Minister of State Fatima Khawaja said the Internet was not controlled or deliberately slowed down. Rather, the increased use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) has affected Internet speeds.
He also said that when services of certain apps were blocked, users started using VPNs. It (VPN) slows down local internet services by bypassing them. VPN also slows down mobile internet speed.
Saja Fatima Khawaja said four new cables are being laid to increase internet speed, which will significantly increase internet speed. Efforts will continue so that internet users do not face any problems in the future.
However, the experts dismissed the claims of the Minister of State for Information Technology. They think the government is testing a firewall. It is a security system that can be used to monitor network traffic and control people's activities online.
According to IT expert Malik Mudassar, the use of VPNs can only reduce the connection of individual users by 10 to 15 percent, which by no means causes nationwide Internet problems.
He told ARY News that the government has set up a national firewall and content filtering system to slow down the internet speed. He recommended the government implement targeted firewalls to avoid disruptions to online businesses and general internet usage.
Mobile companies are working with technical experts to solve the problem, said the state minister. He also assured that steps will be taken to prevent such problems in the future.
