The former mayor of Thakurgaon municipality was arrested in the flood murder case!

Former mayor of Thakurgaon municipality and central member of Awami League, Anjuman Ara Begum Bonya has been arrested by law and order forces. A team of army and police arrested him from a house in Boda Thanapara of Boda Upazila of Panchagarh at around 12:30 pm on Wednesday (21 August). Later he was arrested in a murder case.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Boda police station. Mozammel Haque said, 'Anjuman Ara Begum Banya, the former mayor of Thakurgaon Municipality was arrested from Boda Thanapara at around 12:30 pm on the basis of confidential information.

He was later transferred to Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station under army and police guard.

Telling the incident, journalist Samsujjoha Bablu, husband of the flood, said that his wife is ill. He is not known to have been accused in any case before. He has a disabled child. His family hopes that he gets legal justice.

Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) ABM Feroz Wahid said, 'He was taken to the court on Thursday (August 22) morning.

Thakurgaon District Superintendent of Police Uttam Prasad Pathak said that he was arrested in a murder case (case number 18/2024) of Zakir Hossain of Araji Paikpara village of Sadar Upazila on August 21. He will be taken to court today

It is to be noted that Awami League central member Anjuman Ara Begum Banya won by defeating BNP candidate Shariful Islam in the Thakurgaon municipal election held on February 14, 2021 by getting 26,494 votes.

However, when he was elected for the post of ward councilor several times before, he lost his security by getting few votes. After only one and a half years of becoming the mayor, he built a six-storey house at a cost of crores of rupees. He also insulted journalists for publishing news of irregularities and corruption. The councilors staged strike-like programs due to the mayor's rampant corruption.

After the arrest, many people in the municipal area on social media referred to Bonya as an unelected and illegal mayor through vote rigging.
