The United Nations technical expert team is coming to Dhaka today Thursday (August 22) to investigate the killing of protesters during the student movement. They will primarily do research. The initial technical team of the United Nations fact-finding mission will arrive in Dhaka on a week-long visit.
Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen said that the UN team will stay in Bangladesh until August 28. They can extend the tour period if they want. The visit will discuss how Bangladesh can be assisted in the investigation.
It has been reported from Geneva that when the United Nations is going to investigate the quota reform movement in Bangladesh, some international human rights organizations are pushing to raise the issue in the UN Human Rights Council. According to diplomatic analysts, it is not appropriate to raise the discussion in the Human Rights Council at this time with respect to the UN investigation.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights released a report last week on the recent protests in Bangladesh. It said law and order forces used “unnecessary” and “excessive” force during the quota reform movement.
The UN team, which will be led by Rory Mungoven, will come to Dhaka to hold talks with various stakeholders. They will finalize the workflow, process and conditions. However, it is not certain that this group is the main fact-finding group.
Foreign Secretary Masoud bin Momen said the UN team will meet with government authorities and civil society representatives.
During the one-week stay of the UN experts in Dhaka, they will monitor the situation and collect preliminary information.
Meanwhile, international human rights organizations are trying to put pressure on the member states of the United Nations regarding the human rights situation in Bangladesh. They want the situation in Bangladesh to be discussed in the Human Rights Council. According to diplomatic sources, such discussions could expose Bangladesh to criticism during the UN investigation.
Bangladesh hopes that the UN team will take a decision based on the situation on the ground and will be careful to include Bangladesh's situation in the discussions of the Human Rights Council.
