The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the killing of Martyr Sharif Osman Hadi, the convener of the Inkilab stage and one of the faces of the July mass movement. At the same time, the organization called upon the Bangladesh government to conduct a quick, independent and transparent investigation to find out the real cause of this murder.
On Friday (December 19), UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Turk said in an official statement that ensuring the safety of active and important figures in the political arena has now become very important for Bangladesh.
Volker Turk said, “I am deeply saddened by the killing of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, who played an important role in the mass movement of students in Bangladesh last year.” He recalled that last week he died in Singapore while undergoing treatment after being shot, which is very worrying.
The UN human rights chief called on everyone to show restraint in the context of the tension created across the country after the murder. Retaliatory violence will further complicate the situation and undermine the rights of ordinary people, he said.
Calling on the interim government in the statement, Volker Turk said that a quick, impartial, thorough and transparent investigation must be carried out to determine the reason behind Hadi's murder. At the same time, he emphasized on ensuring accountability by bringing every person involved in the killing under the law.
The United Nations Human Rights Commissioner also said that the government should take effective steps to ensure the safety of political activists, human rights activists and important people in public life before the National Parliament elections to be held next February.
It is to be noted that Sharif Osman Hadi was seriously injured when miscreants shot him from a moving motorcycle when he went to participate in a public meeting in Vijayanagar area of the capital on December 12. He was first operated on at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. Later he was admitted to a private hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment and from there was taken to Singapore by air ambulance. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment in Singapore on Thursday (December 18) night.
