Although the flood situation in different upazilas of Sylhet has improved, the water has increased due to last night's rain. This has caused flooding in most areas of the city. Roads are submerged, water is also entering houses.
Water has also entered Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical Hospital.
According to the Water Development Board, the water level at various points of Surma-Kushiara in Sylhet is decreasing but the water level is increasing at the Sylhet point. As of 9 am, water is flowing 13 cm above the danger line. In 12 hours the water at this point rose by 15 cm.
Residents of the outskirts of the city said that for the past few days there was water in several roads of the suburb's CD and D blocks. Although it decreased a little yesterday, all the blocks of the suburbs and even the main road were submerged in water at night. Many have left their homes and taken shelter elsewhere at night. Water also entered businesses.
Not only in the suburbs but also in various areas of the city including Zindabazar, Kanishail, Terratan, Jamtala, Sobhanighat, there have been reports of water entering houses.
Sylhet Division's largest hospital Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical Hospital has been flooded due to rainwater and water has entered the emergency department and ground floor of the hospital. The hospital authorities said that medical services are being disrupted somewhat.
According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center of the Water Development Board, the flood water in various border upazilas of Sylhet district caused by the upstream flow has reduced a little. But still the Surma-Kushiara water is flowing over the boundary.
As of 9 am on Monday, water was flowing 58 cm above the water mark at Kanighat point of Surma river. At this point, 10 cm of water fell from 6 pm to 6 am on Sunday. However, at Sylhet Point, the water has increased by 15 cm in these 12 hours and is flowing 13 cm above the boundary line.
At the same time, Kushiara river water is flowing over 53 cm at Amlishad point and 17 cm at Fenchuganj point. At Amalshid point it decreased by 34 cm but at Fenchuganj point it increased by 7 cm.
According to the Sylhet district administration, 400 tons of rice and 1.5 lakh 50 taka in cash have been allocated for flood affected people in Sylhet. Besides, 1,250 sacks of dry food, baby food worth Tk 9 lakh, beef feed worth Tk 9 lakh have been allocated.
6 lakh 9 thousand 733 people of 59 unions of Sylhet City Corporation including 9 wards of Sylhet Sadar, Companyganj, Goainghat, Jaintapur, Kanaighat, Jokiganj, Biyanibazar and Golapganj upazilas have been affected by flood. 550 shelters have been opened in the district. A total of 781 villages in 8 upazilas of the district have been flooded.
Descending from the hills of Meghalaya in India, several areas of Jaintapur, Kanighat, Goainghat Upazila were flooded. Rural roads and houses were destroyed by water. Local administration, volunteers work to rescue people trapped in water. BGB also helps them.
During this time, the flood situation was created in the district as the river water continued to rise. Goainghat, Companyganj, Jaintapur, Kanighat and Jokiganj upazilas of the district have been flooded the most.
