The sale of watermelons has started in the capital under the slogan 'farmer's product, farmer's price'. This program is going on in five places of the capital. The places are – Bangabandhu Chatwar in Khamarbari, Zamzam Tower in Uttara Sector 11, Abdul Gani Road in front of Secretariat, Japan Garden in Mohammadpur and Nayabazar in Old Dhaka.
Dr. Agriculture Minister inaugurated this program at Bangabandhu Chatter next to Khamarbari in the capital on Thursday afternoon. Md. Abdus Shaheed. This program is being conducted under the initiative and management of Bangladesh Agri Farmers Association (BAFA).
BAFA leaders said that from Thursday afternoon, watermelons weighing more than 5 kg at 100 taka, watermelon weighing more than 7 kg at 150 taka, watermelon weighing more than 9 kg at 200 taka, and watermelon weighing more than 11 kg at 250 taka per piece have been sold. Through this, the farmer is directly selling his produced watermelon. This initiative will continue till 27 Ramzan and after that the decision will be taken considering the market situation.
Meanwhile, on the first day of watermelon sale, a huge crowd of buyers was seen. BAFA said that 2,500 watermelons were sold out in five hours on this day.
The Minister of Agriculture inspected the activities of selling watermelons at Bangabandhu Chatter next to Khambarari in the capital. He said, the farmer works hard to cultivate this watermelon. We are working to get fair price and development of that farmer.
He said, when the BAFA leaders came to consult with me, I told them that consumers want to eat watermelon, but many are unable to buy because of the high price. You take the initiative. Then they took this initiative. I think this is a big initiative to break the syndicate.
Agriculture Minister said, market management is very important. The government is working to prevent large price differentials at the producer and consumer levels. You should highlight more information about the syndicate in the media. We will not hesitate to break the syndicate information anywhere.
The minister said that the government is working for the welfare of the people. Government has many initiatives to sell products at fair prices. But there are no manpower and experts to take all the initiatives together across the country. Still we are working as much as we can for the welfare of the people.
