There are few better litmus tests for true love than gauging your partner’s reaction to an animal.
A video posted to TikTok by Kayla Windrow (@salvage.souls) has gone viral after revealing the heartwarming way her husband embraced a rescue dog she saved from euthanasia. Since the clip was posted, it has received over 824,000 views and almost 200,000 likes.
“I know true love exists because I can bring a new dog home that was otherwise going to be euthanized and instead of getting upset with me, he does this,” Winrow captioned the footage. “Proof that your person is out there.”
The video shows Winrow’s husband swaying calmly with the large dog in his arms, while another one of their canines begs for similar attention.
Winrow had posted a separate clip of the pup, named Kanoa, sharing a bit of her back story and why she decided to rescue her. The dog was found wandering around an elementary school when she was turned in to animal welfare, Winrow wrote. The animal was scheduled to be euthanized just one week later after nobody claimed her.
Although the couple are already fostering two dogs, they decided to make room for one more.
“Something about her called to me, and I just knew we were her only way out,” she wrote. “She is such a sweet, well-behaved dog, and I can’t believe nobody came looking for her.”
Viewers in the comments echoed Winrow’s passion for rescuing dogs, and emphasized the way it can bring couples with this common ground closer together.
“Such a precious moment,” @kellyjanex wrote. “We already have [two] dogs and I wanted a third, fell in love with her, so my partner embraced her six weeks ago then we went and picked her sister up on Saturday to foster her.”
“That’s one of the reasons why I fell in love with my husband. We are both passionate about helping dogs. Currently, all four dogs were strays,” @seashoreclams wrote.
Winrow’s profile includes many pleas to viewers in her local area to foster or adopt dogs from the shelter she visits, prioritizing dogs who are on the list to be euthanized.
In the video describing Kanoa’s back story, Winrow said: “Lives are in danger and shelters are in crisis mode. Innocent animals are paying the ultimate cost for human negligence. They deserve a chance. They deserve someone to say ‘yes’ to them.”
