Reminiscing that when her daughter Sheikh Hasina returned home six years after the murder of Bangabandhu's family members, Ziaur Rahman did not allow her to enter the ancestral house at number 32 in Dhanmondi, the Prime Minister said, “We wanted to read Milad at number 32, but Ziaur Rahman did not allow me to enter.” On the contrary, he said that he would give a house, a car, everything. I said I will not take anything from him. I can't take anything from a murderer.
The party's president and prime minister said these things when Awami League leaders went to greet the 44th Homecoming Day at Ganobhaban on Friday (May 17).
At this time, senior leaders including general secretary of Awami League congratulated him with flowers. Leaders of Chhatra League-Youth League and other organizations were also present.
Claiming that Ziaur Rahman and his wife Khaleda Zia wanted to meet him in Delhi and London, Sheikh Hasina said, “When I was in Delhi, Ziaur Rahman wanted to meet me, his wife also wanted to meet him, but I did not meet him.” When he still wanted to meet in London, we didn't. When I came, they wouldn't let me enter number 32, on the contrary, the houses and cars would reach, that's not acceptable to me.
The Prime Minister said, I returned that day (May 17, 1981). Had no experience managing such a large team. I did not try to be a leader while doing Chhatra League. I fulfilled the responsibility given by the team. But when I got this responsibility, it was a big responsibility.
Awami League president said, I didn't think about what I got or not. I don't care about the future. I think we will build the future of the people of the country more beautifully, that is our goal.
At that time, the Prime Minister said that Awami League is the strongest and biggest organization in Bangladesh today. The most acceptable party to the people. Every time there is a conspiracy, he comes out to face it and warns the party leaders that there will be conspiracies in the future as well. He urged everyone to be aware.
Addressing the leaders, he said, remember, not only being a leader of a party, how much I could do for the people, what I could give, what I gave – this is the big thing in the life of a politician. If you keep this in mind, many things can be done for the people of the country.
Stating that the country has changed in the last 15 years, Sheikh Hasina said, if people do not have political thoughts and consciousness, do not have patriotism, do not have the conviction to move forward, then it cannot move forward. Those who were in power in 1975 tried to ax their power, could not improve the country. Today we can say that the country has changed. More changes need to be made in the future. Because my father had only one dream to build the country. That is our plan.
After the killing of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family on May 17, 1981, he returned to the soil of Bengal after a long exile. On this day at 4:30 in the afternoon, he arrived at the then Dhaka Kurmitola Airport from Delhi, the capital of India, via Kolkata in an Indian Airlines flight.
On the night of August 15, 1975, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the greatest father of the Bengali nation, was killed along with his family in the most brutal murder in history by a group of stray army officers. Bangabandhu's two daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana survived as they were abroad at that time. Before this, in the absence of Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina, she was elected president of the organization in the national conference of Awami League held on February 14, 15 and 16, 1981.
