San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters on Tuesday and was asked about the contract situations of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and offensive tackle Trent Williams.
He didn’t have any news to share.
“Zero updates,” Shanahan said. “Nothing has changed.”

Aiyuk has been in headlines all offseason long as he remains in a “hold in” looking for his next contract. Williams, on the other hand, is in a more traditional holdout as he seeks an adjusted deal.

Aiyuk is entering his fifth and final year under team control. The former first-round pick in 2020 enjoyed his best season as a pro last year, reeling in 75 catches for a career-high 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. He finished the season on the All-Pro Second Team.
Aiyuk now wants to be paid like a top receiver in the league, but to this point, the two sides haven’t been able to reach a deal.
Aiyuk formally requested a trade last month, but the 49ers were adamant about not moving him. General manager John Lynch has maintained a similar stance about not wanting to move Aiyuk all offseason long.
“I love our roster. I love the way it’s comprised,” Lynch said earlier this offseason. “As I said, we were right there. And we got to find a way to get just a little bit better. And I’m doing everything in my power to keep our roster together and that’s my goal. And I don’t question that. I’ve got so much belief. When you talk about guys like Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo (Samuel), these are guys we drafted. They’re guys we take a lot of pride in what they’ve become, who they’ve become. And we couldn’t be more proud of these guys.”
The two sides are clearly off in their valuation, which has led to this long process. The 49ers have reportedly had trade talks with multiple teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it’s been reported that Pittsburgh is just waiting for San Francisco to give them a final answer.

The 49ers open the regular season on Monday, Sept. 9 against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football. They’d love to have both Aiyuk and Williams suited up, but it’s clear that neither will do so without a new contract.
