EC not in a position to disobey party decisions: CEC

Regarding the sixth upazila election, the ruling Awami League had instructed that the relatives of ministers and MPs in the upazila cannot be candidates. Following the party decision, many ministers MP's relatives have withdrawn their candidature. Many others are still in the polling field as candidates, not following the party's decision. However, the Election Commission is not worried about this at all.

Chief Election Commission (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said that the EC is not in a position to disobey the party decision of the candidates. It is entirely a matter of political morality. Besides, the CEC also said that the issue of spreading influence in the upcoming upazila elections will not be a big problem.

He made this comment in response to a question on this issue at a press conference of the Election Commissioner on Tuesday (May 7).

CEC Kazi Habibul Awal said, 'It is not for the EC to see who stood from which party in the election. Our job is to manage elections. We see how the election is contested. We will not see whether there is party competition.'

He said that the law states that if there is a candidate in the election, then he will be declared the winner of the election. If someone has won like this it is according to the law.

Meanwhile, 418 platoon BGB has been deployed in the first phase to maintain law and order in order to conduct the elections in a free, fair and peaceful manner. BGB will work as a mobile and striking force to maintain peace and order in the constituency from May 6 to 10. Apart from this, the government has declared a general holiday in 141 upazilas on Wednesday on the occasion of the polls.

It should be noted that after this four-phase election, three-phase voting will be held on May 23, 29 and June 5.
