Court fines Salim Pradhan for 'wasting time', orders cancellation of candidature

The Appellate Division has fined Salim Pradhan Tk 10,000 for wasting court time. At the same time, the Supreme Court upheld the cancellation of his candidature for the post of chairman in the Rupganj Upazila Parishad elections of Narayanganj.

On Thursday (May 16), the full appellate bench of 8 judges headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan passed the order.

Salim Pradhan, who was sentenced to four years in prison for illegal wealth acquisition and money laundering cases, has submitted nomination papers for the post of chairman in the Rupganj Upazila Parishad elections.

As he was convicted in a criminal case, the returning officer canceled his nomination after scrutiny on April 23. Later, Salim appealed to the Deputy Commissioner seeking the validity of the cancellation of nomination papers, but on April 28, the Deputy Commissioner upheld the cancellation of the nomination.

Then on April 30, Salim Pradhan filed a writ in the High Court seeking the validity of his candidacy and allotment of symbols. After hearing the writ petition, the High Court declared Salim Pradhan's candidature valid and ordered allotment of symbols.

Rupganj Upazila Parishad Chairman candidate Awami League leader Habibur Rahman appealed against that order in the Supreme Court Chamber Judge Court. In view of this, on May 2, the chamber court issued a stay on the order of the High Court in the candidacy of Salim Pradhan and the allocation of symbols.

On September 30, 2019, RAB arrested Salim Pradhan from the plane bound for Thailand at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in an anti-casino operation. RAB said that after raiding his home and office, foreign and domestic currency and a large quantity of foreign liquor were seized.
