The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to stop military operations in Rafah, Palestine. The ICJ issued the order in The Hague, Netherlands on Friday (May 24). Al Jazeera news.
In the ruling, ICZ Chief Justice Nawaf Salam said the humanitarian situation in Rafah had worsened since the court's last order in March. As a result, Israel's attack on Rafah must be stopped immediately.
Al Jazeera reported that Nawaf said the humanitarian situation in Rafah was now classified as 'catastrophic'. The Court is not convinced that the measures taken by Israel to increase the safety of civilians in the Gaza Strip are sufficient. Not enough steps have been taken to reduce the risk, especially for those recently displaced from Rafah. The Palestinian people are at risk as a result of the military operation in Rafah.
Nawaf Salam said that Israel must immediately stop the military attack on Rafah. The attack could hit Palestinian groups in Gaza. It will disrupt the normal life of the people living there and may even lead to their physical destruction.
Israel has been asked to submit a report to the court within one month on the progress in implementing the measures ordered by the ICJ. The court also ordered Israel to open the Rafah border crossing for the entry of humanitarian aid.
South Africa went to the International Court of Justice to demand an end to Israel's attack on Rafah. The country claims that Israel is carrying out genocide in Gaza. For this reason, the attack must be stopped there. ICZ judges on Friday ordered a halt to the attack on Rafah, taking into account South Africa's appeal. Also in view of this application the rule was issued.
