The apparent low pressure over the Bay of Bengal has already turned into a depression. It may gain more strength and develop into a deep depression on Friday night itself. At present, the depression is located 670 km away from Bangladesh.
The depression is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm on Saturday (May 25). It is named 'Remal'. So far, meteorologists are predicting that it may hit the coastal areas of Bangladesh. People in coastal areas are worried about possible damage. Preparations have already started to prevent its damage.
On Friday (May 24) night, special weather bulletin No. 3 informed about the position of the low pressure.
It is said that the low pressure located in East Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal area is moving towards North-Northeast and staying in the same area. It was 745 km southwest of Chittagong sea port, 680 km southwest of Cox's Bazar sea port, 710 km south of Mongla sea port and 670 km south of Payra sea port at 6 pm today (Friday). It may move further northeast and intensify.
The notification also said that the sustained maximum wind speed of 40 kmph within 44 km of the low pressure center may increase to 50 kmph in the form of gusty winds. The ocean is moderately rough in the vicinity of the low pressure center.
In this situation Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra sea ports have been asked to show remote warning signal number 1. Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the North Bay of Bengal and deep sea have been asked to proceed cautiously close to the coast until further notice. They are also told not to wander in the deep sea.
Meanwhile, meteorologist Hafizur Rahman said on Friday (May 24) that the low pressure is likely to cross the coast through the southwest region of Bangladesh after it takes the form of cyclone 'Remale'. Khulna division mainly falls in this region. With the force of the wind, it can cross the coast at the speed of a severe cyclone (89 km/h). However, after becoming a cyclone, its course may change.
Preparedness in coastal areas
Meanwhile, the local administration has started strong preparations in the districts of the coastal areas to deal with the cyclone 'Remal'. The Disaster Management Committee held an advance preparation meeting in Satkhira on Thursday. In the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Humayun Kabir said that 887 educational institutions including 169 shelters are being made suitable for use in dealing with cyclone 'Remal'. Besides, six thousand volunteers have been kept ready to participate in emergency work. Apart from this, five lakh 25 thousand taka has been reserved for use in emergency relief work.
Preparations have also been made in coastal district Bagerhat. The district administration said that 359 shelters have been kept ready for the safe shelter of people. In addition to two lakh 66 thousand 51 people, cattle can take shelter in these shelters.
Bagerhat District Commissioner Moha. Khalid Hossain said that the district administration has made all kinds of preparations to deal with the possible cyclone 'Remal'. In addition, five and a half lakh taka in cash and 643.4 tons of rice have been stored. DC said that 3 thousand 180 members of CPP and about 500 members of Red Crescent, Rover, BNCC, volunteer organizations are ready in the district. All further measures will be taken based on the signal from the Meteorological Department.
Coast Guard members conducted awareness miking in Barguna against 'remal'. On Friday (May 24) from 4:00 pm, this campaign was miked in different areas of Patharghata upazila for an hour.
According to Coast Guard sources, under the leadership of Patharghata Coast Guard South Zone Contingent Commander M Firozzaman, the Coast Guard members carried out miking in various dangerous areas of the coast including Launch Ghat, Nilima Point of Patharghata Municipal Town.
