Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing’s team principal, has publicly aired his apprehensions about the proposed elevations to the sport’s budget cap slated for 2026. Concerns come amid discussions that could see the cap rise to between $215 million and $220 million.
Christian Horner’s concerns echo a sentiment prevalent in the Formula 1 community concerning the budget cap, an economic constraint designed to level the playing field among competing teams. This framework impacts how teams strategize and compete, and any changes could significantly alter the dynamic within the sport. Horner’s perspective is especially pertinent given Red Bull’s stature as a dominant force in Formula 1 and their recent entanglement with budget cap violations, which curbed their technical endeavors due to penalties.
During internal and public discussions, the conversation has revolved around adjusting the current financial cap to potentially include costs previously excluded, such as team catering, which had notably seen Red Bull overshooting their allocated budget leading to financial and developmental repercussions.
The Red Bull team chief revealed his concerns that staff members should not feel the effects of the budget cap. He commented, as quoted by GPBlog:
“I mean, I think there’s been a huge amount of learning through the cost cap. I think that what I think is the most important thing for 2026 is that the employees don’t bear the brunt of those changes. So I think there’s a sensible discussion about what’s being included, what is to remain excluded and what actually is relevant to creating performance.

“For example, does a Christmas party actually make your car go faster? Now, if that is to be included in the cap, of course, every technical director is going to want a front wing as opposed to a Christmas party, which is a bit tight. And so it’s finding that balance. I’m not saying that our technical director doesn’t like Christmas parties, but he likes front wings. So it’s finding that kind of balance where the employees aren’t the ones that bear the brunt of this.
“By and large, it’s been a very productive and sensible discussion. It’s finding that balance between what are exclusions and what is included within that higher number.”
The technical dialogue included discussions on precise inclusions and exclusions under the proposed cap adjustments. The finer points of these deliberations are crucial as they directly impact the strategic planning and operation of teams, with Red Bull’s previous infraction spotlighting the significant effects of cap limitations, which included restrictions on their crucial wind tunnel usage.
