The internet has rallied behind a woman who told her sister, “I told you so,” after her sister’s husband left her due to her controlling behavior.
In a popular Reddit post on the “Am I The A*****?” forum, user West-Dragonfly-7526 shared her story about her sister Lisa, 27, who has an obsessive tendency to maintain a strict gray, white, and brown aesthetic in her home. Lisa would go as far as throwing away anything that didn’t match her color scheme, including gifts and toys belonging to her 2-year-old, Maya.
“I’ve told my sister several times she needs to stop this before she does something to push Mark over the edge she told me to shut up because she knows her man so well,” the 21-year-old Redditor explained.
The final straw came when Mark’s elderly mother, an avid knitter, gifted the couple colorful sweaters she had painstakingly crafted. Lisa, unhappy with the vibrant colors, secretly threw the sweaters away. When Mark found out, he was furious and decided to end their marriage, demanding a divorce.
The Reddit post, which garnered 14,000 upvotes, described how Lisa called their parents to share the news of the divorce. The original poster (OP) couldn’t resist saying, “I told you so,” a comment that sparked a backlash from their parents, who criticized her for not being more sympathetic.
Since then, Lisa has moved in with their parents and refuses to address her issues or seek therapy, according to the OP.
“For those wondering, no, Lisa can’t get the sweaters back. She tossed them into a random dumpster, and by the time she went back, they were already gone.
“Mark’s mom can’t make new ones either—it took her over a year to knit the original ones. She’s in her late 60s, has arthritis, and used expensive yarn. I’ll update if anything changes,” the OP added.
The sister sought advice from the online community and a marriage counsellor weighed in on the family saga.

Expert Opinions
Marriage and family therapist Becky Whetstone, from Texas, spoke to Newsweek and offered her verdict on the situation, emphasizing the dysfunction within the family.
Whetstone acknowledged that while Lisa has the right to make her own choices, her wastefulness and disregard for others’ feelings are alarming.
“I’m curious to know why she throws perfectly good things away—it may reveal a narcissistic tendency to believe that everyone else thinks like she does. How wrong she is,” she told Newsweek.
She explained Lisa’s decision to discard her husband’s belongings was a significant boundary violation.
Whetstone also criticized the OP for her unsolicited advice and lack of empathy. She pointed out that judging and shaming Lisa was unnecessary and only added to the family’s dysfunction.
“The family is boundary-less and do not stay in their own lanes, pure and simple,” she said.
Reddit Community Reactions
Reddit users largely supported the OP’s response to her sister’s behavior.
“Lisa doesn’t seem to realize that other people are actual humans with their own preferences, not just props for her ideal aesthetic,” commented one user.
Another person, identifying as a fellow knitter, expressed their outrage: “As a crocheter and knitter, I would be DEVASTATED if someone threw away my work after it had been gifted. That lady put so much time and effort into those sweaters.”
Another user added: “Your sister needs serious therapy. You were right to call her out. She has two choices now: apologize to her husband and get therapy to address her issues, or continue down this path and risk more relationships.”
