Low-lying areas of three districts are inundated with floods, further deterioration is expected

Low-lying areas of three districts of the country have been inundated with flood water. Millions of people have been affected. The flood situation is expected to worsen in some areas.

The flood forecasting and warning center of the Water Development Board (PUBO) reported this information on Tuesday (August 20).

Sardar Uday Raihan, executive engineer of Paubo, said that at present the water of Dhalai river is flowing over 14 cm above the boundary line in Kamalganj of Moulvibazar, the water of Khoai river is 55 cm above the boundary line in Banna of Habiganj and the water of Muhuri river is flowing 63 cm above the boundary line in Parashuram of Feni. This has caused floods in Moulvibazar, Habiganj and Feni.

According to Paubo, the water level of Brahmaputra, Yamuna and Ganges is decreasing, while the water level of Padma river is stable. The water level of these rivers may decrease in the next two days. However, the water level of the main rivers in the northeastern and eastern parts of the country is rising.

According to information from meteorological agencies, moderate to heavy rains are expected in the northeast and adjacent uplands of the country in the next three days. As a result, the water level of the main rivers of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrakona, Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts in the northeastern region may increase at certain points.

The waters of Manu, Khoai, Dhalai and Sarigoin rivers of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts may flow over the boundary in the short term at some points on the plain. The water levels of major rivers in the southeastern and eastern parts of the country are rising.

According to information from meteorological agencies, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in southeastern, eastern and adjoining uplands of the country. As a result, the water level of Feni, Halda, Sangu, Matamuhuri, Gomti etc. rivers in this region can remain stable overall. However, the water level at Parashuram point of Muhuri river may come down below the danger line and the flood situation in the lower areas of Feni district may improve.

According to Paubo, among the 116 stations of various rivers under their observation, the water level increased in 60 and decreased in 54 on Tuesday. The water level of the two stations remains unchanged.
