RAB has arrested Ali Azam Mukul (55), nephew of Awami League veteran politician former minister Tofail Ahmed and former member of parliament from Bhola-2 constituency.
He was arrested from Hazaribagh area of the capital on Wednesday at 7 pm.
The matter was confirmed by RAB's Legal and Media Wing Director Lt. Col. Md. Munim Ferdous.
Ali Azam Mukul, former MP of Bhola-2 Constituency, is one of the accused in the murder case of Nahidul Islam in the capital's Mirpur area on July 19 during the anti-discrimination student movement.
Ali Azam's family is involved in politics. He was the mayor of Daulatkhan Municipality. In the 2014 general election, Ali Azam was elected as a Member of Parliament for the first time. After that, he was elected as a Member of Parliament in the second and third rounds of the 2018 and 2024 National Parliament elections.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5 in the face of students' agitation over quota reforms in government jobs.
Since then, Awami League ministers-MPs and top level leaders and activists have been arrested one after another. Ali Azam Mukul, the former Member of Parliament of Bhola-2 (Daulatkhan and Borhanuddin) was arrested on Wednesday.
