The US-Israeli broker is Iran's exiled leader Reza Pahlavi

Exiled leader Reza Pahlavi wants to use the opportunity of anti-government protests in Iran to come to power. 65-year-old Pahlavi left Iran before the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Since then he has been living in the United States. The US-Israeli broker is Iran's exiled leader Reza Pahlavi.

Pahlavi has called for the downfall of the Islamic Republic of Iran in various messages and videos published by the United States on social media X, supporting the protesters. In a video message, he said, “We will bring the Islamic Republic and its dilapidated, fragile repressive system to its knees completely.”

Does Pahlavi have popular support in Iran?

The actual level of Pahlavi support within Iran is difficult to gauge. However, in some verified videos circulating on social media, protesters were seen chanting 'Long live the Shah'. This indicates that, at least in a section, there is sympathy for him.

But most of the protesters do not favor any particular leader. They are mainly chanting slogans against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei like 'Down with Dictatorship' and lashing out against economic collapse, inflation and unemployment. The recent 12-day war against the US-Israel has further weakened Iran's economy, which has become a major context for these protests.

Azadeh, a 27-year-old from northern Iran, said in a message that what Reza Pahlavi learned was from her father—who had failed. We have seen the Pahlavis, now is the time for a democratic country.

Claiming to be ready to take over

Just as Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini led the movement with a single voice during the 1979 Islamic Revolution, there is no single leadership in the current situation. In this vacuum, Pahlavi is projecting himself as a 'transformational leader'.

Born in 1960, Pahlavi was proclaimed Prince during his father's coronation in 1967. During the Shah's reign, the royal family's lavish lifestyle and deep economic inequality created widespread discontent. At the same time, the repressive policies of the Shah's notorious secret police Savak also increased public anger.

After leaving Iran, Pahlavi underwent military training in the United States and studied political science. In 2023, he visited Israel and met with the country's top leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He also supported Israel and US attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities.

However, Pahlavi has yet to receive clear political support from Western governments. US President Donald Trump has promised to stand by the protesters if they are fired upon, but said it 'may not be appropriate' to meet with Pahlavi now.
