The rise in popularity in women’s basketball can directly be correlated to Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark. While she isn’t the only reason the sport has taken off recently, she has played a very large role in it all. Clark was drafted first overall by the Fever in the 2024 WNBA Draft after leading the Iowa Hawkeyes to two straight NCAA Championship games. Her star power in college made her a magnet for attention, and it has carried over to the WNBA.
However, even with all this stardom, Clark still wasn’t able to make the Team USA roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics this summer. According to Christine Brennan of USA Today, Clark was left off the roster because the program was worried about the lack of playing time for her on such a loaded team. Her fan base can be a little wild and it could have been a distraction. Even with this move, Clark could still make the roster due to injury.

Star Chelease Gray was added to the roster, but she has been dealing with an injury for a long time and has yet to make her debut in the WNBA this season. Clark would be the obvious choice if the program looks to replace her. Clark took the snub in stride but finally responded to being left off the team.
Fever head coach Christie Sides told the media that Clark told her that the Team USA snub “woke a monster.” Clark will likely be even more motivated to see success on the court just to prove them all wrong for leaving her off the team.

Through 12 games in her WNBA career, Clark is averaging 16.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. She has slowly been figuring out how to translate her game to the professional level, with some bumps along the way. But she is living up to the hype surrounding her after being drafted, giving fans a show almost every time out on the court.
If this Olympic snub does anything for her, it could light a fire under her like no other. Clark is already one of the more competitive players in sports, so this could take her game to another level. While the rest of the WNBA has had some issues with her stardom, Clark has respected the process. This snub should scare the rest of the league because Clark may just be getting started.
