Inkilab Manch broke symbolic dam in Dhaka University to demand the demolition of illegal and unilateral dams in Bangladesh's inter-border rivers. Meanwhile, they have announced a long march of students from Dhaka towards Dambur Dam in Tripura on Friday (September 6) and the organization has called upon everyone to participate in it.
They announced this by displaying the poster of the Long March at the Ganadhikkar and Banga song ceremony organized at the foot of the Raju sculpture at around 5 pm on Friday.
Students protested by reciting river songs, resistance songs, poems. Later rebel poet Kazi Nazrul's music broke the symbolic barrier. Also 'Banyaya mare kharaya kharaye, Blood spilled on the border', 'Padma teesta abrar, call to war again and again', 'Tista tipai farakka, tolare awaz de dukka', 'Sonia and Gerua Modi, lost my river', 'River dams in murderous India' , Death trap of Bangladesh' etc. Festoons with slogans are displayed.
The organizers hope that the resistance song will convey the ideology and purpose of this movement to the common people and revive the unforgettable tradition of national unity and independence.
According to a notification, the main objective of today's event is to raise the demand for the immediate demolition of all illegal dams built by India and call for the river to return to its normal flow. In the eleventh century, the number of rivers in Bangladesh was about one and a half thousand. Now, although there is water in the rainy season, it is almost like a paddy field in the winter. Whereas the traditional form of Bengal was riverine. It is needless to say how much the country's existence can be threatened if the river is endangered. The significant reason why the rivers of Bangladesh are being killed is India's unjust unilateral aggression.
Highlighting the harmful side of dams, it is said that due to the Farakka Dam on the upstream Indian Ganga and the dams on other rivers, precious natural resources like the Sundarbans are heading towards destruction. The forest is not getting the amount of fresh water it needs to survive. In 1986, the salt content of Sundarbans soil was 32 thousand microms, which now stands at about 40 thousand microms. The condition of agriculture is the worst. The GK irrigation scheme in the southern region has been severely affected due to the low water level. Many of the irrigators are either shut down or strained beyond their capacity. During the dry season, more than 320 kilometers of waterways in Bangladesh become unnavigable. As a result, tens of thousands of people became unemployed, increasing transport costs. Another 15 to 20 permanent temporary earthen dams including the Teesta, Farakka and Ghazaldoba dams are in operation on the rivers flowing between India and Bangladesh.
The circular highlights the equality of international rivers in the 1815 Vienna Convention on the Use of International Rivers and the 1921 International Danube River Commission. At the same time, the principle of equitable distribution of water resources was highlighted in Article 51 of the Declaration of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm in 1972 and Article 15 of the principles adopted in the Helsinki Conference of the International Law Society in 1966.
It is said that India has violated the internationally recognized law, by creating barriers in almost all the flow paths of the 54 rivers flowing over Bangladesh one after the other, its huge water flow is flowing to high areas with the help of artificial canals and is using water in all fields including agriculture as desired. Now is the time to stop these aggressive activities of India.
