DMP's campaign to free Dhaka's sidewalks from today

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is embarking on a strict operation from Wednesday (April 1) to reduce public suffering by freeing the footpaths and roads of the capital Dhaka.
Police Traffic Department said in a press release on Tuesday (March 31) that the campaign will start from Ramna Division and end at Gulshan Division among the eight traffic divisions. This operation will be conducted under the leadership of the magistrate against the operators of various shops on the side of the road in Dhaka city.
Traffic department of DMP said that this strict action has been taken to resolve the severe traffic congestion caused by the occupation of certain influential traders.

Anichur Rahman told the media that this campaign is not against ordinary hawkers, but against those capable businessmen who have blocked the road by building restaurant kitchens or permanent establishments on the road. Businesses who are occupying and using the sidewalks beyond their legal space, we will de-occupy them now. Apart from this, preparations are also underway to launch a holiday and night market soon in the designated area for hawkers.
Before this, the Acting Commissioner of DMP on March 23. A public notice signed by Sarwar informed that food restaurants, vehicle workshops, furniture and clothing shops in various areas of the metropolis have extended their operations to footpaths and main roads. Pedestrian movement is severely disrupted due to restaurant cooking equipment, grill or kebab making machine, workshop tires and equipment and furniture being placed on the road.
The circular also mentions that automotive workshops often occupy a lane of pavements and roads to repair vehicles. As the pedestrians are forced to travel on the main road, on the one hand, the safety risk is increasing, and on the other hand, artificial traffic jam is being created.
The DMP has made it clear that those who are illegally encroaching on footpaths and roads and carrying out business activities should immediately remove their goods. Otherwise strict disciplinary action will be taken against law violators through mobile court headed by Special Metropolitan Magistrate and Executive Magistrate of DMP from tomorrow.
This initiative has been taken in the public interest so that the citizens can move smoothly and safely.
