Flood death increased to 23, affected 5.7 million people


The death toll has risen to 23 in 11 districts due to ongoing floods in the country. On Sunday (August 25), the number was 20 people.

According to the ministry's report, more than 5.7 million people have been affected by the floods.

This information is known from the latest report of the flood situation of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief till 11 o'clock on Monday (August 26).

The ministry said that the flood situation is improving. The water in all the rivers has started to decrease.

According to the report of Water Development Board's Flood Forecasting and Warning Center on Monday, there was no significant rainfall in eastern Comilla, Brahmanbaria and Feni districts bordering Indian Tripura and inland basins of Tripura province during the last 24 hours. Upstream rivers continue to recede. As a result, the current flood situation in the lower areas of Feni and Comilla districts continues to improve.

At the same time, the water of the rivers in Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts has come down below the danger level. In the next 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur in eastern and adjacent parts of the country. During this time, the water level of Gomti river in Comilla district of the region may decrease and the flood situation of the region may improve. At the same time, the flood situation in the lower areas of Feni district may improve in the next 24 hours. But some may remain stable at some point.

As of Sunday, the total death toll in the floods was 20. And the number of affected people was about 52 lakh.

Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief highlighted the overall situation of the flood on Sunday. Kamrul Hasan said that 10 lakh 47 thousand 29 families were trapped in water in 11 districts of the country due to floods. And about 5.2 million people have been affected by the flood.

The secretary said that 73 upazilas, 545 unions and municipalities of 11 districts were flooded and damaged. The death toll is 18, two are missing. 3 thousand 654 shelters have been opened for flood victims and 4 lakh 15 thousand 273 people and 22 thousand 298 cattle have been sheltered in the shelters. He also said that 748 medical teams are operational to provide medical services to the victims of 11 districts.

Stating that the distribution of relief from all levels, including public and private, is continuing in the flood-affected areas, he said that a total of 3 crore 52 lakh taka, 20 thousand 650 metric tons of rice, 15 thousand packets of dry rice and other items have been distributed from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief in 11 districts. Food, baby food of Tk 35 lakh and cow food of Tk 35 lakh have been allocated. Apart from this, all the districts of the country have enough stockpiled relief materials.
