Former IGP Abdullah Al Mamun 8 and Shahidul Haque remanded for 7 days


A Dhaka court has granted seven-day remand to former Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque and eight days to Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun for further questioning in two separate murder cases.

On Wednesday (September 4), when the investigating officers applied for their remand, the court granted it after the hearing. Aktaruzzaman. AKM Shahidul Haque was IGP from 31 December 2014 to 31 January 2018 and Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun from 30 September 2022 to 5 August 2024.

It is known that in the case of the death of grocery shopkeeper Abu Saeed in Mohammadpur on July 19, when Mamun was requested to be remanded for 10 days, the court gave him an eight-day remand. And on August 13, SM Amir Hamza Shatil of Mohammadpur filed this murder case in the court. Six people including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were accused in the case.

In addition, Shahidul was remanded for 10 days in a case filed in connection with the death of 45-year-old businessman Abdul Wadud during the quota reform movement in Dhaka's New Market area on July 19, and the court granted seven days of remand.

Earlier on Tuesday (September 3) at midnight, the Intelligence Division (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested two former Inspector Generals (IGPs) of Police, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and AKM Shahidul Haque. Two separate messages sent by the Public Relations Department of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police informed about their arrest. According to the message of the Public Relations Department, the former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun expressed his desire to surrender while in army custody due to the case against him. Police took him into custody on Tuesday night. In another message, it is said that Shahidul Haque, the police chief of six years ago, was arrested on Tuesday night from Sector 16, Uttara.

In the afternoon after the fall of the government, some officials including the IGP and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun left the police headquarters in a helicopter. He has not been seen in public since then. He was dismissed before the formation of the new interim government. After the fall of the government, the Ministry of Public Administration canceled its contract on the night of August 6. He was supposed to retire a year and a half ago. Still, Sheikh Hasina kept him as IGP in the contract. Before becoming IGP, he was Director General of RAB. His contract was last extended for another year on July 5.

On the other hand, AKM Shahidul Haque was IGP from December 2014 to January 2018. He became the Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in 2009 after the Awami League government came to power. After their arrest on Tuesday night, they were taken to the DB office. A case has been filed against two of them in connection with the violence in the movement after the fall of the government, police officials said.
