Former municipal mayor Banya arrested in Thakurgaon murder case

Former mayor of Thakurgaon and Awami League central committee member Anjuman Ara Bonya was arrested in the murder case and sent to jail.

Thakurgaon police arrested him from a house in Boda upazila of neighboring Panchagarh district on Wednesday (August 21) midnight. A 5-day remand application was made after Bonya was produced in Thakurgaon learned Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Thursday. The learned judge of the court, Nityananda Sarkar, fixed August 25 for the next hearing of the case and ordered him to be sent to jail.

It is known that on Wednesday night, Zakir Hossain, son of Mofiz Uddin of Arazi Paikpara village of Sadar Upazila, filed a murder case at Sadar police station, mentioning the names of 77 people including mayor Banya and accusing 150 to 200 unknown people. Accused No. 37 is Anjuman Ara Banya. The names of 77 people including Thakurgaon-1 Constituency MP Ramesh Chandra Sen, District Awami League General Secretary Deepak Kumar Roy, Reserved Constituency MP Draupadi Devi Agarwala, former Municipal Mayor Anjuman Ara Begum Bonya, Councilor Ekramuddaula are mentioned in this case.

It is said in the case that Al Mamun, Shawon Parvez, Abu Raihan, the area-based coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement and son of Zakir Hossain, the plaintiff in the case, were summoned by the commissioner of the case, Ekramuddaula Sahib, on August 5, i.e. the day of the incident. Later, at one stage of the discussion with them, the Commissioner put the 4 people inside a room and set it on fire while the other accused were outside. Later, when the accused quickly left the scene, the locals came forward and rescued the mentioned 4 people from the house in a burning state and first admitted them to the 250-bed general hospital. Rakibul Hasan Rocky, Shawon Parvez, Abu Raihan, sons of plaintiff Zakir Hossain, died while undergoing treatment in Rangpur and later in Dhaka for better treatment. Al Mamun also died while undergoing treatment in Rangpur.
