The ruling Islamist government has taken a tougher stance in Iran, which has been in turmoil due to the ongoing anti-government movement centered on the economic crisis. The government has termed the active participants in the ongoing protests as 'enemies of Allah' and threatened to punish them with death penalty.
According to a statement issued by Iran's Attorney General Mohammad Movahedi Azad's office on Saturday, according to Article 186 of the Constitution, the protestors are being declared 'Mohareb'. According to the statement, death penalty will be applied as the maximum punishment for those involved in the movement for taking a stand against the Islamic Republic.
Article 186 of the Iranian Constitution states that if any group or organization takes an armed stand against the Islamic Republic, all members of that group will be considered Mohareb or enemies of Allah. The constitution provides for death penalty as the only punishment for this crime.
The economic crisis has emerged as the main reason behind the ongoing anti-government protests in Iran for the past two weeks. The continuous devaluation of the Iranian Rial over the years has left the country reeling from hyperinflation. Currently, the value of the Iranian Rial against the dollar stands at about 994 thousand 55, which is unprecedented in the history of the country.
Due to this extreme plight of the national currency, the cost of food, shelter, medical care and essential commodities have gone beyond the reach of the common man. Unable to cope with the cost of living, common people get angry.
In this situation, on December 28, wholesale and retail traders in different markets of Tehran called for a strike to protest against inflation and cost increases. From there the protests started, which soon spread to 31 provinces of Iran.
As the protests gradually escalated, the entire country practically came to a standstill. The government has deployed a large number of security forces in various cities including the capital Tehran to control the situation. At the same time, internet and mobile communications were cut off.
Along with the police, the army and the Islamic Republic Guard Corps (IRGC) have been deployed since Saturday. Several protesters were reported killed in clashes with security forces and the IRGC on Saturday night.
