There have been allegations of recent hacking of Republican candidate Donald Trump's campaign data surrounding the upcoming US presidential election. And US intelligence officials have confirmed that Iranian hackers were behind it.
BBC reported this information in a report on Tuesday (August 20).
According to reports, the FBI and other US government intelligence agencies said in a joint statement on Monday (August 19) that Iran has decided to interfere in the US election to create conflict and destroy confidence in democratic institutions.
On August 10, Trump's campaign team also blamed Iran for the data hack. However, Tehran denied this allegation.
Iran's mission to the United Nations said in a statement that the US presidential election is an internal matter for the country. Iran never interferes in it. Iran is not connected with them in any way.
Sources familiar with the hacking investigation told CBS News they suspect Iranian hackers may have also targeted the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
Harris' campaign also said last week that there was also a cyber attack via a spear-phishing email. But it failed.
US intelligence agencies that released Monday's statement include the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Cyber attack tactics are not new, they said, and Russia and Iran used similar methods in previous US elections.
