The National Motorsports Appeals Panel has confirmed its decision on Richard Childress Racing’s appeal on Austin Dillon’s penalties after the controversial race ending in Richmond.
While Dillon celebrated the victory, his aggressive moves led to significant consequences, including his disqualification from the Cup Series Playoffs eligibility and a 25-point reduction. The panel has now confirmed that Dillon’s penalties will remain in place, rejecting the team’s appeal for the driver.
The incident, involving Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin, prompted NASCAR to impose strict penalties on August 14. Dillon’s win stood, but his eligibility for the playoffs was retracted, and the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing team suffered a 25-point deduction in both the drivers’ and owners’ standings.
Additionally, the team’s spotter, Brandon Benesch, faced a three-race suspension for instructing Dillon to “wreck” Hamlin, however, this has now been reduced to a one-race ban.

The panel, comprising Tom DeLoach, Kelly Housby, and Tommy Wheeler, released the following statement, as quoted by NASCAR.com:
“NASCAR represents elite motorsports and, as such, its drivers are expected to demonstrate exemplary conduct if its series’ championships are to be validated. In this case, the ‘line’ was crossed.”
Richard Childress Racing also released a brief statement following the decision, commenting:
“Richard Childress Racing is disappointed in the results of today’s hearing in front of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel. We respect the NASCAR appeals process, but we do not believe that today’s outcome reflects the facts presented. We plan to appeal the decision to the Final Appeal Officer.”
The penalties stemmed from several violated NASCAR regulations, specifically Sections 4.4.B and 12.3.2.1.B, focusing on conduct and playoff eligibility, with additional infractions noted against spotter Benesch under Sections 4.4.D and 10.1.A.
