No electricity for 72 hours, surrounded and vandalized the office in anger

The angry crowd surrounded and vandalized the electricity office in Jhalkathi due to no electricity connection for 72 hours. On Wednesday (May 29) around 6:30 pm, the angry people took position in front of the electricity office. Later, a team of Sadar police station reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

Some of the HSC examinees who participated in the protest said that the exam is ahead of us. Monsoon-floods are already grinding conditions. Then there was no electricity for three days. Bathing, drinking water, cleaning the bathroom in the intense heat has to be in a helpless state.

Locals said that when the Deputy Commissioner inquired from the engineer, the executive engineer assured to provide electricity connection at 10 am. As the evening wore on, people gathered at the electricity office as there was no activity in the electricity connection. Some of them threw bricks. Some also banged the main gate.

Prominent businessman Nazrul Islam Talukder said that the electricity connection was disconnected 72 hours ago. Even if the storm subsides, the authorities have no initiative to provide electricity quickly. De-metallized people work effortlessly. Talked two-way with the District Commissioner. All the surrounding stations have electricity but only Jhalkathi town has no electricity. He is deceitful and incompetent.

Executive Engineer of Jhalkathi Ozopadiko. Matiur Rahman said that trees fell on 33,000 KV lines in various areas including Jhalkathi-Barisal regional highway and electricity supply was stopped. Apart from this, power lines and poles were extensively damaged due to Cyclone Remal's rampage in various areas by breaking trees and tree branches. They are being repaired. It will take time for the situation to normalize.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station Shahidul Islam said, Executive Engineer Md. I have spoken with Matiur Rahman. He promised to provide electricity connection in another two hours.
