Pomeranian Who Is a ‘Personal Flycatcher’ Wins Pet of the Week

This week we’ve seen a cat with an adorable repertoire of sleeping positions and a dog throwing a hilarious tantrum when he thought his owners hid his ball.

Meanwhile, our readers have been sending in their adorable and funny pet pictures and videos for our Newsweek Pet of the Week.

Winner

This week’s Pet of the Week is 3-year-old Pomeranian Gu, short for Grogu, who has earned the heartwarming title of “flycatcher.”

Owner Laura Wasserman told Newsweek: “He catches flies every time he is outside. He is constantly looking for them.”

The playful habit showcases his alert and spirited nature, and in a video shared by Wasserman, Gu gets to work eating flies from the air as his white-tipped ears move around like periscopes.

Weighing just under five pounds, Gu is a tiny but tough dog with a fierce personality.

His favorite activities include spending time with his family and playfully pretending to bite—although he has never chomped anyone.

Gu adored his big brother companion, a white Lab, and would spend hours cleaning his face, paws, and ears. Since his buddy’s recent passing, Gu has been a bit sad. However, he continues to engage in his quirky habit of hiding treats all over the house for his owner to find and enjoying daily walks—even though he often demands to be carried home.

Finalists

Our first finalists this week are Chloe and Sasha, who live with owner Marilyn Batchelor.

Chloe is a Maltese mix and Sasha is a Chihuahua mix, and both are rescue dogs.

“They have distinct personalities that keep me entertained,” Batchelor told Newsweek. “Chloe is my glamour girl, now 14 years old, and Sasha smiles when I walk in the door.”

Next up this week is feline duo Angus, 8, and Owen, 7.

They came to live with owner Ellen McNett in November after she met them at a nearby shelter.

“Seconds after I sat down, they went to work convincing me that we were meant to be a family,” McNett told Newsweek.

Despite the fact the two came in separately, they had quickly made friends and become a bonded pair, so McNett adopted both.

“It certainly seems that they are happy together- even though there are two cat beds side by side, they frequently choose to cram in together on one bed,” said the owner.

Both cats have FIV or Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), a viral infection in cats that weakens the immune system, making them more susceptible to other infections. It’s similar to HIV in humans and is mainly spread through bite wounds.

Despite this, both are doing well, cared for by McNett and spending every day together.

Last but not least this week is Dottie, a one-year-old “shorkie” or Shih Tzu/Yorkshire terrier who lives with owner Alison Kaplan.

“It was the cutest when she sat on the dining table chair and just waited thinking she would get some dinner,” Kaplan told Newsweek, sharing an adorable picture of Dottie.
