On Thursday, the Golden State Warriors and superstar guard Stephen Curry shook up the basketball world when the two sides agreed to a one-year extension worth $62.6 million.

The deal makes Curry the fourth NBA player, along with superstars LeBron James, Paul George, and Kevin Durant, to pass $500 million in career earnings.
Curry has panned out a Hall of Fame career for himself. The 10-time All-Star caught up with The Athletic and said how grateful he is to continue his career with Golden State and finally get a deal done.

“It’s not different from my perspective,” Curry told The Athletic. “You have an appreciation for the position and the opportunity and the support from people who’ve been with you on the journey. I’ve always said I wanted to play for one team my whole career. So it’s good to get (the extension) question out of the way and give complete focus to basketball and to the season.”
Curry also added that winning is still the focal point as he enters his age 37 season.
“It’s still about winning,” Curry said, “and taking the steps necessary to give ourselves a chance. The standard hasn’t changed. The expectation hasn’t changed.”
In recent months, Curry has been vocal about his desire to remain in the Bay Area and has even said that he wants to retire with them.
“I’ve always said I want to be a Warrior for life,” Curry told Andscape in July. “At this stage in my career, I feel like that’s possible.”
Curry had two years remaining on the four-year, $215.4 million contract he signed in Aug. 2021. He was eligible to sign a one-year extension this offseason due to the NBA’s over-38 rule, which prevents teams from offering contracts of four years or more to players who are or will be 38 years old during that deal.
In July, Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy said he was”confident” they would be able to negotiate a deal to lock up Curry. The challenge for the Warriors now is to build a formidable team around their superstar guard.
The Warriors recently lost future Hall of Famer Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks this offseason. However, they still have Draymond Green and other solid pieces to be a threat in the Western Conference.
Is that enough to compete in the gauntlet that is the Western Conference? Maybe not. Still, with Curry on your side, playing at an elite level, it forces the front office to make a move that could put them over the top.
Last season, in his 15th NBA season, Curry averaged 26.4 points on 40.8% 3-point shooting, 5.1 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game.
