The Mayor of Kaliganj Municipality is in hiding, disrupting civic services

In the face of the students' movement, Sheikh Hasina resigned on August 5 and since leaving the country, Gazipur's Kaliganj Municipality Mayor SM Rabin Hossain has been hiding. The municipality has practically stopped. As a result, even going to the municipality, the residents are not getting the desired service.

On Monday (August 19) at around 12 noon, it was seen that the lock was hanging in the mayor's office in Kaliganj Municipality. Even if some officials came, the entire municipality was silent. Municipal executive officer (PNO), administrative officer, municipal engineer and all the officials and employees are spending idle time. At this time, service seekers are seen sitting on the balcony of the municipality. They say this situation has been going on for weeks.

Talked to some of the victims and service seekers. They said that even a week ago, there was an overcrowded crowd in this municipality. And those who are busy with work.

Shahidul Sarkar of Bhadartti village in Ward No. 3 of the municipality, who came to take municipal service, said that he has been visiting the municipality for the last three days for the inheritance certificate. But since there is no mayor, he is going back every day.

We spoke to some employees of the general, health, tax collection and assessment, license and market departments of the municipality who did not want to be named. They said, we have tried to provide services to the residents of the city in special arrangements for a few days. But now I can't. Due to which the services of the citizens are being disrupted. But we have nothing to do. When he leads, we follow.

Mofazzal Hossain Akand Momen, councilor of the 1st ward of the municipality, said that due to the absence of the mayor, we are not able to provide services according to the needs of the residents.

Chief Executive Officer of Kaliganj Municipality. Milan Mia said that since August 5, the mayor has not come to the office. There is temporary difficulty in providing services to the citizens. But soon the suffering of city dwellers will be removed.

Mayor of Kaliganj Municipality SM Rabin Hossain said on the phone that there was no disruption in the activities of the municipality till August 15. All activities are well managed. I have not been able to come to the office since August 18. When asked when he will be in office, the mayor said, he knows the state of the country, let's see what happens?

Kaliganj upazila executive officer SM Imam Razi Tulu said, Gazipur DDLG is taking information about who is absent in the municipality. He will inform the ministry, then the ministry will decide what will happen.

Local Government Gazipur Deputy Director (Deputy Secretary) Md. Wahid Hossain said that a report has been sent to the ministry regarding Kaliganj municipality. The ministry will take a decision in this regard soon.

It is to be noted that earlier in the beginning of July of this year, 12 councilors including 9 general councilors and 3 reserved women councilors of the municipality took a strict stand against the arbitrariness of Kaliganj Mayor SM Rabin Hossain.
