USA Star Ilia Malinin Broke Social Media Silence With Subtle Change

United States darling Ilia Malinin was the overwhelming favorite to win gold in the men’s singles event after opening a commanding five-point lead in the short program, but saw his Olympic dream unravel after falling twice and completing an uneven free skate en route to a disappointing eighth place.

“I blew it,” Malinin said on the broadcast after the event. “That’s honestly the first thing that came to my mind, there’s no way that just happened. I was preparing the whole season, I felt so confident with my programs, so confident with everything. That happened. I have no words, honestly.”

The American superstar admitted at the time that the pressure of the Olympics was just too much to bear.

“I felt really good this whole day, going really solid, and I just thought that I all I needed to do was go out there and trust the process that I’ve always been doing with every competition,” he said. “But of course, it’s not like any other competitions, it’s the Olympics.”

While he wasn’t able to come home with gold in the men’s singles competition, Malinin did help Team USA win gold in the team category earlier in the Games. He still hasn’t issued a new post to Instagram since his disaster on the ice, but the American star did break his social media silence with a slight change by updating his bio.

Former USA figure skater and gold medalist Nathan Chen revealed what could be next for Malinin, if he chooses to use this Olympics as a learning experience.

“Ilia is absolutely in a position where he is young, he is still hungry, he still has so much potential and certainly someone we’ll continue talking about for the next many Olympic cycles,” Chen said. “But tonight, is a night where he’ll have to reflect and reevaluate where he was mentally, physically and try to identify how he can come into the next Olympics and have a different outcome.”

Malinin isn’t wasting much time getting back into competition as his agent announced his plans to compete at the World Championships which are scheduled for March 23-29.
