The world's second largest 2,492-carat diamond was found in Botswana. On Thursday, the Canadian mining company announced that it had found the diamond.
Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond said in a statement on Friday that the largest chunk of the diamond was discovered at the Karowe diamond mine in northeastern Botswana using X-ray detection technology.
Lucara did not say anything about the estimated value of the diamond found. Could not even give an approximate idea. In terms of carat weight, it is second only to the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond discovered in South Africa in 1905.
Lucara president William Lamb said in a statement, “We are delighted to have discovered this extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond.”
The statement said it was 'one of the largest rough diamonds ever found'. It was identified, recovered and preserved using the company's Mega Diamond Recovery X-ray technology installed in 2017.
Lucara Botswana Managing Director Nassim Lahri presented the palm-sized diamond to President Mokgwetsi Masisi in his office on Thursday.
Massey congratulated the company, saying, 'I am told this is the largest diamond ever discovered in Botswana and the second largest in the world. 'It is of great value.'
According to International Monetary Fund statistics, Botswana is one of the world's largest producers of diamonds, which are the country's main source of income. 30 percent of GDP and 80 percent of it is exports.
