12 City Corporation issues notification removing Mayor, appointing Administrator

The government has issued a notification removing the mayors of the city corporation.

Local Government Department sources said they were removed under the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024.

A notification in this regard was issued by the local government department on Monday (August 19).

Currently there are 12 mayors in 12 city corporations of the country.

Administrators are sitting in the place of removed mayors, they will perform the duties and look after the city corporations.

Additional secretaries and four officers of equal rank have been made administrators in Dhaka North and Dhaka South and Narayanganj City Corporation.

Apart from this, divisional commissioners have been given the responsibility as administrators in Chittagong, Khulna, Barisal, Sylhet, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Gazipur City Corporations.

The removed mayors are: Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam, Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukdar Abdul Khalek, Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Barisal. City Corporation Mayor Abul Khair Abdullah, Rangpur City Corporation Mayor Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa, Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Md. Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, Mayor of Mymensingh City Corporation Ikramul Haque Titu, Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation Zayeda Khatun, Mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation Selina Hayat Ivy, Mayor of Comilla City Tahsin Bahar have been removed.

Earlier, the government removed all (493) upazila parishad chairmen, 323 municipal chairmen and 60 zilla parishad chairmen.

Meanwhile, 495 Upazila Parishad chairmen will be replaced by Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNO) and District Administrators (DC) in place of District Parishad chairmen.
