At least 60 people died in flash floods caused by the bursting of the 'Arbat' dam in Sudan. Many people are still missing in this incident. In a report on Tuesday (August 27), the British media BBC News reported this information.
Sudan's Ministry of Health confirmed the four deaths on Sunday (August 25) night. But the next day, Monday, local officials said the death toll had already reached 60. The death toll may rise, as many people are still missing.
The Ministry of Health said that due to the heavy monsoon rains during the rainy season, a dam named 'Arbat' on the north side of Port of Sudan broke and caused this flood. In addition to many casualties, many houses were damaged.
According to the UN, at least 20 villages have been submerged under water after a dam broke in Sudan. At least 50,000 homesteads in these villages have been destroyed or damaged.
According to the report, the 'Arbat' dam, known as the main source of water for the city of Sudan, is adjacent to the Red Sea. The coastal city of Port of Sudan is currently used as the administrative capital of Sudan. Because the war is going on in the main capital, Khartoum.
The country's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been fighting the Sudanese army since April last year. Many people have already been displaced by it.
Sudan has several dams, of which the Arbat is one. Dams are built to deal with floods.
Sudan has been experiencing heavy rains and floods since last June. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), about 317,000 people (56,450 families) have been affected by the floods in 16 states of Sudan. The worst affected are the residents of North Darfur, Nile and West Darfur states.
Sudan's health ministry said on Monday that 132 people have died across the country in floods since June.
