Death of injured youth in Maheshkhali attack


In Maheshkhali of Cox's Bazar, a youth named Mohammad Osman (38) died after being shot in a clash over the encroachment of salt field land and shrimp enclosure. He died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital around 3 pm on Sunday.

The deceased is the son of Abul Hashem of Fakirakata area of ​​Bara Maheshkhali Union of Osman Upazila. Earlier on Saturday afternoon, Mohammad Osman was picked up and shot dead by rival gunmen over disputed shrimp enclosures and salt fields.

The injured Osman was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital in a coma. On Monday morning (May 06) news of the youth's death spread to the area causing tension. Police patrolling in the area has been increased to keep the situation under control.

According to local people and police sources, there have been several clashes and tensions between the Aman and Gafur groups of the greater Maheshkhali over the encroachment and dominance of shrimp enclosures in the area. Due to this incident, people of the rival Aman group attacked Osman on Saturday. During this time Shahab Uddin and some others were injured.

Khairul Amin, the brother of the deceased, said that some people including Ehachan Karim, Rahmat Karim, Maqsud Mia, Abu Bakkar, led by the local terrorist Aman, picked up his brother and shot him. He was rescued by the locals and taken to the local health complex and later to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital. He died after one day of treatment.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Maheshkhali Police Station Sukant Chakraborty said that the injured youth died in a clash between two groups over a land dispute in Bara Maheshkhali. Police have visited the spot and necessary legal action is being taken in this regard.
