NTIA comment following the Drumsheds licensing hearing outcome, where Enfield Council approved the continued operation at full capacity of Drumsheds, which is one of London’s leading large-scale event spaces.
Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association said:
“This hearing should never have escalated to such a contentious point. The targeting of specific art forms risks perpetuating discrimination against cultural spaces and their communities. Drumsheds’ continued operation reaffirms its vital role as a cornerstone of London’s nightlife – a space where music, culture, and community converge. The council’s balanced approach to regulation sets a positive precedent, enabling cultural venues to thrive responsibly while fostering community engagement, supporting local economies, and maintaining a safe, inclusive environment for all.”
“The Enfield Licensing Sub-Committee’s decision to allow Drumsheds to reopen, with proportionate additional safety measures, is a significant victory for public safety and one of London’s most iconic cultural venues. Drumsheds has consistently demonstrated a steadfast commitment to safety and welfare, securing its reputation as a standout operator in London – perhaps even a global leader in guest care and safety standards.”
“Businesses within the night-time economy are dedicated to fostering safe and secure environments where people can enjoy their nights out responsibly. Operators go to great lengths to minimise risks, investing significantly in education and awareness campaigns to inform guests about potential dangers. However, it is vital to recognise that venues alone cannot shoulder full responsibility for tragedies linked to individual choices. While venues work tirelessly and make substantial investments to ensure safety, personal accountability remains a crucial factor in protecting the well-being of all. By continuing to develop and enhance harm reduction strategies, we aim to empower individuals to make better, more informed decisions through education and awareness.
“This outcome highlights the importance of fair, evidence-based regulation that supports cultural venues while prioritising public safety. Overly restrictive measures—such as those suggested at the hearing by the Metropolitan Police risk undermining trust and collaboration between venues, authorities, and the communities they serve. Venues like Drumsheds exemplify professionalism, providing safe, well-managed environments while fostering trust and collaboration across stakeholders.”
