As the Philadelphia Eagles get ready for their upcoming matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they will be doing so without the services of star wide receiver DeVonta Smith. Smith suffered a concussion last week against the New Orleans Saints and hasn’t been cleared to play.
Philadelphia could also miss their other star wideout A.J. Brown as he has been dealing with a hamstring injury. He is listed as questionable entering the weekend.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported the news on social media.
Smith suffered his concussion toward the end of last week and there was doubt he would play most of this week. After the game against the Saints, Eagles defender C.J. Garnder Johnson didn’t hold back on calling New Orleans out for a dirty hit on the wide receiver.
“Man, that’s the dirtiest s—- I ever saw in football, bro,” Gardner-Johnson told reporters after the game, via Tim McManus. “You all obviously saw forward progression to a stop. For them to take a cheap shot at one of our key players, it goes to show what type of team that is … let’s talk about how they’re playing dirty on they side.”
The hit on Smith could have likely been avoided but now the Eagles will go forward without one of their better players. The hope is that he can be cleared to exit concussion protocol soon and that this week off should help him. But with any concussion injuries, it’s better to be cautious.
Before the injury, Smith had caught seven passes for 79 yards. On the season, he has caught 21 passes for 239 yards and one touchdown.
The Eagles’ offense struggled for the majority of the game last week until a fourth-quarter comeback. They ended up getting the win to improve their record to 2-1 on the season.
Brown has missed the last two weeks due to injury so without Smith in the lineup, the hope is that he can suit up. If he can’t go, things could get very tough for the Eagles as they face the Buccaneers.
Philadelphia will need to rely on others to step up, namely tight end Dallas Goedert. Goedart registered 10 receptions for 170 yards in the win over the Saints last week so the Eagles could look to him as the focal offensive player once again if Brown can’t go.
