'Government committed to organizing elections in the first half of February'

Chief Advisor Professor. Muhammad Yunus said the government is committed to organizing national elections in the first half of February.

UK's trade ambassador Rosie Wunterton met with Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus at the state guest building Jamuna on Thursday to discuss various issues including trade, investment and bilateral cooperation.

The meeting discussed important issues including airport management, clean energy and the participation of the chief adviser at the UN General Assembly session in New York. Besides, the democratic transformation process of Bangladesh is also exchanged.

He mentioned, “What has happened in the last 5 years was a farce in the name of elections.” He also said that after the election, he would return to his previous work and profession.

The chief adviser highlighted the government's steps to tackle fake information and confusion and emphasized the need for international cooperation in this regard. He said the UK assistance would be especially important in the face of this global challenge.

Trade envoy Rosie Wunterton praised the recent reforms in the business rules, customs and revenue system of Bangladesh. He mentioned the possibilities of more deep cooperation in the education, aviation and clean fuel sector. At the same time, the UN General Assembly praised the leadership of Professor Yunus and the initiative to include top leaders of the main political party of the country.

The meeting also discussed the plan to buy the research and survey vessels of Bangladesh from the UK and the plan to buy coastal patrol ships. It is reported that the HMS Enterprise acquisition process is likely to be completed by the end of this year.

During the meeting, the special envoy to the chief adviser Lutf Siddiqui, the British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Lamia Morshed, Chief Coordinator of the Chief Advisory Office, and Mosharraf Hossain, Director General of Europe and CIS Wing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present.
