India released 11 lakh cusecs of water in one day through Farakka

Now India has opened 109 sluice gates of Farakka Dam. On Monday (August 26), 1.1 million cusecs of water was released from this dam (downstream) in a single day. The authorities claim that if the water above the danger limit is not released, the dam would have suffered severe damage. Because of this, the mouth of the dam had to be opened.

West Bengal has been receiving heavy rain for two days, confirming the forecast given by the Meteorological Department of Alipore, Kolkata. This has increased the water level of the Ganges and increased the pressure in the Farakka Barrage.

Also, due to floods in the neighboring states of Jharkhand and Bihar in West Bengal, Farakka water has risen above the flood limit. Due to this, the authorities have opened all 109 gates of the dam. 11 lakh cusecs of water was released through these gates on Monday.

General Manager of Farakka Barrage R. Desh Pande said, Farakka Barrage authorities are always on alert. Every moment is being monitored. The way the water pressure has built up in a very short period of time, if all the 109 gates were not opened, there would have been a huge pressure on the barrage. This could have caused great damage. For now, 40,000 cusecs of water has been released in the feeder canal and 11 lakh cusecs in the downstream.

River researcher Dr. Tuhin Wadud said, opening the Farakka dam means releasing the water of the Ganges. Ganga goes to the palace and meets Padma. So opening the dam at Farakka will have an impact on the Ganga-Padma basin. Especially the districts of Padma Par of Rajshahi division, some districts including Kushtia, Ishwardi, Pabna, Rajbari should be careful. But the Ganga and Padma did not flow over the districts of Rangpur division.

Water flows from upstream to downstream. So the Ganga water will not come here. Abnormal flow of water in Ganga will affect Padma. Hence, there is a risk of flash floods in the districts along the banks of the Ganga and Padma. Quick action should be taken to deal with the damage.
