March 14 is also known as National Pi Day—a celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). For many, it has become a day to enjoy discounts on pizza, pies and other circular foods.

Restaurants and retailers nationwide are offering special deals to mark the occasion. Here’s a look at some of the best deals available for Pi Day 2025.

Why It Matters

Pi Day has evolved from a niche celebration for math enthusiasts to a widely recognized event that businesses use to attract customers with themed promotions. The day offers an opportunity for restaurants, especially pizzerias and bakeries, to engage with customers while providing discounted and free treats.

When Was Pi Day Invented?

Pi Day was first officially recognized in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw at the San Francisco Exploratorium.

Shaw and his colleagues celebrated by marching in a circle and consuming fruit pies. The event gained popularity over the years, and in 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution recognizing March 14 as National Pi Day. Today, it is celebrated at schools and science organizations, in addition to food-related promotions.

How Many Digits Are in Pi?

Pi is an irrational number, meaning its decimal representation goes on infinitely without repeating.

As of 2021, researchers have calculated pi to over 62.8 trillion digits. While most calculations only require a few decimal places, mathematicians and computer scientists continue to push the boundaries of its known digits for research and computational purposes.
