Panchmukh is full of praise for those who have struggled so far with Bangladesh's Test ability. After thrashing Pakistan, now Bangladeshi cricket lovers are dreaming of playing the final of the World Test Championship. All eyes are now on the final venue, Lord's, to be held in 2025.
Lord's—Cricket Shrine. The first three finals of the Cricket World Cup were held at this venue in London. When the T20 World Cup went to England in 2009, the organizers did not think twice to choose Lord's as the venue for the final. But although the first two finals of the World Test Championship were in England, the venue was not Lord's. The final will be held at Southampton in 2021 and the Oval in 2023. But this time Lord's 'imperfection' is going to show. The ICC yesterday announced Lord's as the venue for the final of the World Test Championship for the 2023-25 cycle. The final will be held from June 11 to 15 next year.
It is not yet time to say which two teams will meet in the final. But for now India and Australia are the top two in the points list. Having just won the historic series against Pakistan, Bangladesh also has the possibility of getting a ticket to the final at Lord's from the top two of the points list!
Bangladesh have moved up to fourth in the World Test Championship's 'complicated' points table after thrashing Pakistan in the two-match series. Nazmul Hussain's team, who started the series from eight, rose to six after the first Test in Rawalpindi, but were reduced to seven with penalty points. The team jumped three places to fourth after winning the second Test in Pindi.
Bangladesh's percentage of 45.83 points in six Tests played in three series in the World Test Championship 2023-2025 cycle. Topping India's percentage points is 68.92, followed by Australia's 62.50 points. New Zealand is third with 50% points.
Bangladesh still have three series in hand. Bangladesh, who are at the bottom of the points list in the first two editions of the World Test Championship, can expect to play in the final. The rest of the series against India, South Africa and West Indies is in Bangladesh. All three series will be this year. Bangladesh will tour India this month, and after playing against South Africa at home, Bangladesh will tour the West Indies. Bangladesh will play a total of six Tests in two of these three series.
12 points for each win, 4 points for a draw and 6 points for a tie in the World Test Championship. However, as the number of matches varies depending on the series, the order is not directly based on these points. Instead, the teams are ranked by calculating the percentage of the maximum points possible for the number of matches the teams will play. For example, Bangladesh's points in six Tests so far are 33. As maximum 78 points are possible in 6 matches, Bangladesh's points are 45.83 percent.
If Bangladesh wins the last six Tests in hand and does not pay any penalty points, it can get a maximum of 72.91 points as a percentage. Again, losing all six matches will reduce the points to 22.91 percent. If we see three wins and losses in the next 6 Tests, the percentage points will be 47.91. Who can say what will happen in the end, but at least on paper, Bangladesh has a good chance of playing in the final.
India and Australia, the top two teams on the points table, will meet in a five-match series in November-January. The points difference between the two teams could well have an impact on the table. And that will increase the chances of the teams that are close behind to play the finals, not reduce the book.
Pakistan, which was defeated by Bangladesh, is ranked eighth with 19.05 percentage points. West Indies are only below Pakistan with 18.52 points.
