Cyclone Remal hit
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Mohibbur Rahman said that 2 people have been killed due to Cyclone Remal so far. More than 3 million customers of the affected districts have lost electricity. Due to the tidal pressure seven to eight feet higher than normal, the embankment has broken in several districts including Satkhira, Barguna. Hundreds of villages have been inundated by water entering the coastal low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, due to Cyclone Remal, heavy rains with gusty winds have been reported in the coastal areas. In the coastal areas including Satkhira, Kuakata, there were reports of houses and trees collapsing. Due to the flood, the dam has broken and the water has started to enter. Several areas including the Sundarbans have been flooded. Millions of people in these blackout areas have fled to nearby shelters.
However, the real picture of the damage will be understood on Monday morning. Weather forecasters expect that the storm will make landfall on Monday morning.
Earlier, State Minister for Relief and Disaster Management Mohibbur Rahman held a press conference at 9 pm on Sunday and informed about the 'massive damage'. He said people are in danger during the storm.
Cyclone Remal, which formed in the Bay of Bengal, hit the coast on Sunday night. At around 8 pm, the center of the cyclone started crossing the West Bengal coast and the Khepupara coast of Bangladesh from the southwest side of Mongla. Due to the impact of this cyclone, stormy winds blew in various coastal districts including Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Patuakhali, Barguna. Wind speed was 90 to 120 km per hour. Due to its effect, flood occurs in different areas. Apart from this, the flood control dam at Amtali in Barguna broke due to the abnormal tides caused by the storm.
Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallick, Meteorologist of Meteorological Department, told the media around 12:00 pm that the cyclone is still crossing the coast. At this time of passage, gale-force winds and heavy rains are occurring along the coast. He said, due to the spread of the cyclone, rain may occur in different parts of the country including the coast on Monday. Heavy to very heavy rain may occur at some places.
A man named Shaukat Moral (65) died after falling on his way from his home to a shelter in Satkhira's Shyamnagar before the cyclone. The incident took place in Napitkhali village of Gabura union of the upazila. He is the son of late Narim Moral of Napitkhali village of Gabura union of Shyamnagar upazila.
On the other hand, a person named Shariful Islam (24) died after being swept away by the high tide due to the effect of Remal. The incident took place in Kawarchar area of Dhulasar union of Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali on Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has asked Mongla and Payra Ports to display distress signal No. 10 and Chittagong and Cox's Bazar seaports No. 9. The coastal districts of Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalkathi, Barguna, Barisal, Bhola, Patuakhali and the outlying islands and Char are under the 10th danger signal. The coastal districts of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Feni, Comilla, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Chandpur and their outlying islands and Char are under the 9th danger signal. The river ports of Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalkathi, Barguna, Barisal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Feni, Comilla, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar districts have been asked to show maritime distress signal number 4.
