Awal commission resigned

Five commissioners including Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal are resigning. Habibul Awal himself announced this decision in an emergency press conference at Agargaon Election Commission building on Thursday.

Qazi Habibul Awal read out a written statement to the journalists at the press conference. Habibul Awal said that there was no government influence as the 12th national parliament election was one-party. It wasn't necessary.

Since the last parliamentary elections, opposition political parties including BNP have been agitating for the resignation of the Election Commission along with the government.

The interim government was formed after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5 in the face of the mass movement of students. Since then there have been demands for the resignation of Kazi Habibul Awal Commission. The members of the Election Commission also think that they have to leave their posts in the current situation. Therefore, it is known from reliable sources that he has also made mental preparations for resignation.

However, they were trying to understand whether they will resign themselves, or whether the government has any plan in this regard. It is reported that EC members have tried to contact the President and the top levels of the interim government for advice on the matter but without success. In this situation, the election commission headed by Kazi Habibul Awal is coming before the journalists today.

It should be noted that the current election commission led by Kazi Habibul Awal took oath on February 27, 2022. The term of this commission is five years. During the tenure of this commission, most of the political parties boycotted the 12th National Parliament election held last January. Only Awami League and their allied parties participated in that election.
